What schools have put up legal signs on the roads into campus? I went to UofA in Fayetteville about two years ago to look around campus and did not see any signs.

How did UA Fayetteville get the idea to put these signs up? Did someone bring up to the school that it was legal to carry on campus but not in the buildings at the time? Are these signs even on the city streets like Razorback Rd, Maple Street, and Dickson Street? Also do the signs have the specific wording 'carrying of a handgun prohibited' or are they just generic 'no guns' signs?

I guess at least when I am up there I am 'on a journey' and don't even need a license when on the school grounds to have my handgun in the car.

Ack! Forum ate my post! Ok, so here it is, best as I can from memory... :)

That's an excellent question; I have no idea what precipitated it. It was before the legislative session, so it couldn't have been the campus carry bill. Maybe the shootings last year. Perhaps the UA has been talking to DHS like Malco. lol

As for the signs, they are posted on UA property at the outer corners of campus (Razorback/Maple, Razorback/MLK, etc.) I haven't checked EVERY outside corner, but all the ones I've seen have them. The design is a gun with a slash above the text "Carrying a handgun or other weapon is prohibited on campus".

I wouldn't imagine it applies to the streets themselves if you're just driving through, of course. A gray area would be the metered parking around campus. They are UA-controlled, but possibly part of the street, so I don't know what rules apply. Of course, if you are a student/employee, the UA rules will apply with respect to your enrollment/employment, regardless of whether it is actually illegal or not.

Chris, You stated the bill is now Law. There is no date it takes effect or if there is a time period before it takes effect. Could you educate me on Arkansas law and if the bill takes effect immediately or if there is a built in delay etc. I am wanting to update the Arkansas page at www.handgunlaw.us but need to know if or when the law takes effect. Thank you for any assistance you can give Handgunlaw.us in this matter.

Chris, after looking I found this for Arkansas. Looks like it will become law 90 days after the Legislature Adjourns.

Unless there is an emergency clause or an enactment clause that specifies otherwise, the legislation takes effect 90 days after sine die adjournment.
